"A PEACE of Pie!"

John 16:33 says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” The peace that Jesus spoke of in John 16:33 is beyond comprehension. It is something that we cannot understand with our finite minds. And yet, God has given us clear instructions in the Bible on how to achieve a peaceful spirit in our lives.

In Ephesians 6, Paul speaks of the armor of God, and one of these pieces of armor is the “gospel of peace” - the sandals of peace. When we don our shoes, let it be a reminder that we walk in peace! God desires peace for us, and He has given us all the tools and guidance we need to achieve it.
Let’s be honest—it’s often hard to find peace in the midst of our busyness. That’s why it is so important to look to the scriptures for guidance. When we do this, we can make room for the peace of God to enter our hearts. Reality is, in the midst of our hectic lives, it can be easy to get caught up in worry and distraction. We can forget and lose focus on those things that bring about peace in our lives. Remember the words of Paul in Philippians 4:7-8: “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
This is the key to achieving peace in our lives. Instead of worrying and allowing our minds to become distracted by the cares of the world, we should focus on the things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and worthy of praise. When we do this, the peace of God will guard our hearts and our minds.

At this point, you may be wondering, “What does this have to do with pie?” Well, I’m glad you asked! The peace of God can be compared to a delicious piece of pie! Just as a slice of pie is sweet and satisfying, so is the peace of God. It is a sweet and satisfying peace that transcends human understanding. Just like a piece of pie, it takes time to prepare. You need to look at the ingredients necessary and set the ones not needed to the side. You want to set aside worry, distraction, unforgiveness, guilt and negative thoughts. Then, add in those things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and worthy of praise. Then, after basking in the goodness of God, you’ll be able to enjoy the peace of the pie! Just like a pie, peace is something that everyone can have and enjoy. It can be shared among many, but everyone can still have their own piece of PEACE.

So the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed and distracted by all the cares of the world, remember the peace of the pie. Take the time to focus on the things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. Then you will start to experience the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. Bite into what God has to offer and enjoy! ©Rita Larson 6/30/2023
