"Dealing with the Sting of Death"

This past week, I have heard about some unexpected deaths that have been quite eye opening. One was a high school friend that is younger than me, one another went to the same high school but just a little older than me in age, and another was brought up in church and was the death of a sailor leaving behind a wife and 5 children. Life is precious. The time we have here and the friends and family we have around us is a very special gift. We often take this gift for granted until we lose someone close.

Losing a loved one is undoubtedly one of the most painful experiences we can go through. The grief and mourning that follows can feel overwhelming, leaving us feeling empty and lost. However, in the midst of our sorrow, we can find solace in turning to God for comfort. Psalm 34:18 reminds us that "The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit." He is always there, ready to wrap us in His loving arms and provide us with the strength to carry on. As believers in Jesus, we have the incredible assurance that death does not have the final say. The sting of death is swallowed up by the victory we have in Jesus' resurrection. This truth brings hope and healing to our grieving hearts.

In 1 Corinthians 15:50-57, the apostle Paul reminds us that death is not the end for those who are in Christ. Through His resurrection, Jesus conquered death once and for all, allowing us to live forever in His presence. Revelation 21:4 tell us "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." This is a powerful promise that brings comfort and reassurance during times of loss. We can take comfort in knowing that our loved ones who have passed away are now with Jesus, experiencing the eternal joy and peace that He offers.

As we navigate through our own grief, it is important to remember that there are others in our lives who may not know Jesus. They may be facing their own losses without the hope and assurance that comes from a relationship with Him. In these moments, we can lift them up in prayer, asking God to open their hearts and give them the opportunity to experience eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. It is our duty as believers to share the good news of salvation with those around us, so that they too may find comfort and hope in the midst of their mourning.

So, if you are currently mourning a loss, my friend, do not despair. Turn to God and seek His presence. Allow Him to comfort you in your pain and remind you of the victory that is yours through Jesus' resurrection. Take solace in the fact that death is not the end for believers - it is merely a doorway into eternal life with our Savior. And as you grieve, remember to pray for those who do not yet know Jesus, that they may also come to experience the everlasting joy and peace that can only be found in Him. ©Rita Larson 8/21/2023
