"Devoted to Serving"

Our church had a cookout after church as our vacation bible school came to a close. So many people were involved to make this week a blessing for the children of the church and to serve as an outreach to the community. I love my church and how so many people are devoted to serving each other and the community. As Brian and I were working the snow cone station, I looked around in awe as things were wrapping up. I saw so many of my brothers and sisters in Christ cleaning up and putting things away in what looked like perfect harmony. They were all smiling, laughing, and working together seamlessly.

When we think of service, we often think of spending our time and resources to help others. We think of doing things with our hands or our wallets, but service is so much more than that. Serving others like Christ served involves treating others with honor and respect. Our actions and service should be a reflection of Christ and how He loves.

We can look to Jesus as the perfect example of what it means to serve others. He humbly put others before Himself, even when it meant going to the cross. He healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, and cleansed lepers. He even washed the feet of His disciples, which was a menial task reserved for the lowest of servants. Jesus showed us what it truly means to serve from the heart.

To serve in a way that honors Christ, we must be willing to give sacrificially and with love. We must have a heart of service that doesn’t seek its own gain but instead seeks to bring glory to God. It’s not about getting recognition or patting ourselves on the back. It’s about loving others as Christ loved us. When we serve others, we should view it as an opportunity to serve God.

Jesus said in Matthew 25:40, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” We can think of it like a relay race, and we are passing the baton. We have the baton in hand, serving one another and letting the light of Christ shine through us. We are the last link in the chain and by serving others, we are passing the baton to God. We can be a vessel to help open the door for others to experience the Goodness of God, the love of our Father. We pass the baton over to God and let Him do the rest.

The Bible says in Galatians 5:13, “For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.” We can think of this verse as a call to action. To serve one another is to serve God and to show our love for Him. Serving others is a demonstration of our love and commitment to Jesus Christ. We serve others out of love, not just out of a sense of obligation or duty.

Romans 12:10 tells us to “be devoted to one another in love” and that our service should be a reflection of Christ’s love. We can all serve one another in different ways. Serving doesn't have to elaborate. Sometimes service can be as simple as a kind smile or an encouraging word. It can be helping someone with a task or providing a listening ear. If you are not sure how to serve, open the bible and read all of the ways that Jesus served. He is the perfect example of love and service. Let us show the world the love of Christ by serving one another with the same sacrificial love! ©Rita Larson 7/16/2023
