"Don't Sweat it!"

While traveling today to get to Atlanta for work, it seemed that around every corner was another unwanted event, putting a kink into my day! First thing this morning, I lost track of time and was running late to find that a tunnel along the route to the airport was blocked. Finally getting to the airport, someone had a medical emergency in the line to check my luggage. I am a nurse, so of course I went to action trying to help. In doing so, I almost got decked when he started to revive and was still confused. Finally, I make it to my gate to find that my flight is now delayed. After waiting a bit and finally boarding the plane, we get delayed again before take-off due to weather conditions. I get to Atlanta and grab my luggage thinking I made it! I head to the sky tram to go to the rental car center. After getting on the tram and waiting for a very long time, the doors finally close. Guess what? That was it, the door closed, people were elbow to elbow, and the tram never took off! We ended up having to pull the emergency bar to sound an alert and get help in order to get off of the malfunctioning tram. As directed, I went downstairs to wait on a shuttle to later be told that the tram was fixed and to go back upstairs and get on the tram. It was uncanny how many nuances had occurred! I had to keep reminding myself not to sweat the small stuff!

Are you someone who tends to sweat the small stuff? Do you find yourself getting irritated and angry over the littlest of things? It’s so easy to do; we’re negative by nature and it’s hard to break the habit of excusing our own mistakes and accusing others for theirs. Thankfully, God’s word provides us with the answers we need to break this habit and help us focus on the bigger picture.

In Philippians 2:14-15, it says, “Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world.” This scripture reminds us that we are to be blameless and harmless, no matter what the world throws at us. We are without blemish in the eyes of the Father! We are to be lights in the world, and that means not sweating the small stuff and instead focusing on the bigger picture.

This is echoed in Matthew 12:36, which says, “But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.” This ought to send shivers up your spine! How often do you find yourself complaining, whining, or arguing about something that really doesn’t matter? Instead, we should focus on what really matters: giving thanks in all circumstances. As 1 Thessalonians 5:18 reminds us, “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

So, the next time you find yourself getting worked up over something small, take a step back and remind yourself to put your trust in the Lord, knowing that He will take care of the details. His timing is not always our timing, and His ways are not always our ways! Remember to seek out opportunities to glorify Him. He has promised us peace and joy, and that comes from giving Him our worries and trusting Him to take the lead and carry our burdens for us! So don’t sweat the small stuff! Take everything and place it as the feet of Jesus and leave it there! We serve an amazing God who is always working things for our good! ©Rita Larson 6/26/2023
