"Embracing Our Worth"

In a world that often measures value based on external achievements or appearances, it is crucial to recognize the inherent worth of every individual. Our worth is not determined by our accomplishments, social status, or physical attributes. Instead, our true value lies in the eyes of God, who created each of us with purpose and intention. God views and cherishes each and every life! We need to learn to value ourselves and others as He sees value in us.

Value is a multifaceted concept that

extends beyond material possessions or societal recognition. It encompasses the intrinsic worth and significance of every individual. In Isaiah 42:1, we read, "Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations." These words highlight the unique purpose and value that God has bestowed upon His servant. As God's creation, we too hold immense value in His eyes.

In ancient times, a shepherd's flute, known as a reed, was crafted by tapping a smooth branch until the bark slid off. However, when a reed was tapped too forcefully, it would become bruised and considered worthless, ultimately discarded. This imagery of the bruised reed serves as a powerful metaphor for how society often treats individuals who are deemed unworthy or broken. However, God's perspective on worthiness differs greatly from that of the world.

Isaiah 42:3 states, "A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not quench; till He sends forth justice to victory." This verse reveals God's unwavering love and care for those who are considered broken or unworthy. Just as He promises not to break the bruised reed, He extends His compassion and restoration to all who feel discarded or insignificant. God values each individual, regardless of their perceived flaws or failures.

Another symbol used in Isaiah 42:3 is the smoldering wick. In ancient times, a bit of flax would be dropped into an olive oil lamp to serve as a wick. However, when the wick became carbonized and began to smoke, it was discarded as useless. Similarly, individuals who feel like a smoldering wick may believe they have lost their purpose or value. Yet, God's promise to not quench the smoldering wick reveals His commitment to restore and reignite the flickering flame of hope within us.

Jesus exemplifies the perfect balance between strength and gentleness. He possesses the ultimate strength to overcome any challenge, as demonstrated through His ability to perform miracles, confront opposition, and ultimately conquer sin and death. However, this strength does not diminish His capacity for gentleness and compassion. He is the Shepherd who tends to His flock, gathering the lambs in His arms and carrying them close to His heart (Isaiah 40:11). Jesus offers us a safe haven where we can find solace, restoration, and a renewed sense of worth.

Recognizing our value in God's eyes is essential for embracing our true worth. Each person is fearfully and wonderfully made, uniquely crafted by the hand of God (Psalm 139:14). Despite our imperfections, failures, or the world's perception of us, we are cherished and loved by our Creator. Our worth is not contingent upon external factors but is rooted in our identity as children of God. By embracing this truth, we can begin to see ourselves and others through God's eyes.

Just as we are called to recognize our own worth, we are also called to acknowledge the value in others. Jesus commands us to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31). This includes seeing past external appearances or societal labels and valuing others for who they truly are. By adopting a perspective of empathy and understanding, we can extend God's love and grace to those who may feel unworthy or discarded.

To create a culture that values every individual, we must start with ourselves. Embracing our worth and recognizing the worth of others is an ongoing journey that requires intentional effort. We can begin by renewing our minds with the truth of God's Word, meditating on passages that affirm our value and identity in Him. Through prayer, we can ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the unique value and purpose within ourselves and others.

In a world that often measures value based on external standards, it is essential to remember that our worth is not determined by the world's standards but by God's unfailing love for us. We can extend that same love and value to others as we embrace our true worth in His eyes. We must see ourselves and others through God's lens, valuing every individual's inherent worth. May we cultivate a culture that celebrates and cherishes the intrinsic value of life, knowing that we are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of our Creator! ©Rita Larson 8/6/2023
