"Life Lesson: Faith It 'til You Make it!"

ree

I work in hospice and have for several years. I still remember patients and families that I took care of years ago. While I no longer do direct patient care, I still focus heavily on making sure quality care is provided. As I interview people to join my team, a question I always ask is, "Tell me about your most memorable hospice patient." I want to know that they see hospice as a ministry. You cannot teach someone to have a hospice heart.

As usual, I did a few interviews this week, and I received a response I will never forget. I was told that while being tired and exhausted from being on call and being out half of the night, this nurse still had to go see one of her regular patients, an elderly man who was terminally ill. This gentleman could sense that something was wrong and asked the nurse about it. The nurse said, "It's all good; I just have to fake it til' I make it." The gentleman responded sharply to her and scolded her, telling her she had it all wrong. He said, "You don't fake it 'til you make it. You faith it 'til you make it." This day had a lasting impact on this nurse, and she still uses "faith it til' you make it" as part of her normal vocabulary.

It’s a powerful reminder that no matter how difficult our circumstances, even if we are in hospice with less than six months to live, we can always have faith in the Lord. No matter how dark the night, the sun will rise again. No matter how deep the valley, God will bring us out. As scripture says in Habakkuk 3:17-19, “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.”

Romans 8:38-39, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” No matter how difficult the circumstances, no matter how heavy the burden, we can always trust in the Lord. He will never abandon us.

Jeremiah 17:7-8, “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Likewise, when we are firmly planted and rooted in Jesus Christ, we can trust that our God can and will supply all of our needs.

Our faith in Jesus Christ is that it gives us the strength to overcome even the most difficult trials. When you are feeling down or doubt begins to creep in, hit your knees and stand on the promises of God. All you have to do is "faith it 'til you make it!" ©Rita Larson 1/4/2024
