"Favor of the Father"

When we hear the name Joseph in the Bible, the first thing that often comes to mind is his coat of many colors. This coat was given to Joseph by his father, Jacob, to show him love and favor. Genesis 37:3 says, “Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colors.” This coat was a symbol of God’s favor and grace upon Joseph’s life.

Joseph had a difficult upbringing. He was surrounded by a dysfunctional family and his brothers were jealous of him. Despite the challenges he faced, Joseph maintained his faith in God and allowed Him to use him as an instrument to save his family. Joseph’s coat of many colors is a reminder that no matter what our circumstances, we all are entitled to walk in the favor of God.

We are reminded of this in the Bible in Ephesians 2:10, which says, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” This verse tells us that God has already prepared good works for us to walk in, and that He has given us the power to do them. No matter our family background or upbringing, God’s favor is available to us.

This is the same favor that was given to Joseph. Even though his brothers were jealous of him, and he was sold into slavery, God’s favor was still on him. He was able to rise above his circumstances and become second in command to Pharaoh.

We also see God’s favor in the double portion of inheritance that was given to Joseph. Genesis 48:22 says, “And Joseph said to his father, ‘Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.’” Joseph was given a double portion of his father’s inheritance, which was a sign of great favor.

God’s favor is available to us all. We can all walk in His favor, no matter our background or upbringing. Joseph’s coat of many colors is a reminder of this and that no matter what our circumstances, God’s favor is available to us all. ©Rita Larson 07/01/2023
