Happy Mother’s Day! This is a special day of the year to celebrate and honor the amazing mothers in our lives. As Christians, we are called to recognize the virtuous and loving contributions of our mothers throughout the year, not just on one special day. The Bible speaks to this in several places, beginning in Exodus 20:12, which says, “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” Not only is it important to honor our mothers with our words, but equally important to show our respect for them through our actions. After all, our mothers have invested countless hours into raising us, teaching us, putting up with us, and most importantly, loving us! They deserve our respect and gratitude!

The Apostle Paul also speaks of the importance of honoring our mothers in 2 Timothy 1:5, which says, “When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.” Let us also strive to carry on a legacy of faith that is passed from one generation to the next, beginning with our mothers and grandmothers. If there is one thing I can instill in my family, from generation to generation, and leave to my children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and so forth, it would be the knowledge of the love of Jesus Christ and the gift of salvation! As a mother, I want to plant seeds of faith for future generations to come!

Proverbs 23:25 tells us “She who gave you birth be joyful!” The Proverbs 31 woman is praised for her contributions to her family. Finally, Proverbs 31:28 states, “Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.” This is a beautiful reminder that our mothers should be appreciated and praised for the incredible and selfless work they do!
As we recognize Mother’s Day and all the amazing mothers in our lives, let us remember that honoring our mothers is something we should strive to do every day. The Bible makes it clear that we should be thankful and recognize the hard work and sacrifices our mothers have made to raise us. Happy Mother's Day! ©Rita Larson 5/14/2023
