We all have been through "stuff" in some form in our relationships and marriage is no different. Marriage is always going to have some bumps along the way. Everyone gets married with the intention of staying together, but sometimes things happen, and it just doesn't work out. My husband and I both have a history of divorce and were at a place in life where we were "over" the whole marriage thing. Thankfully, God had a different plan and, by divine appointment, put us in the right place at the right time. Today we are very much "Happy Tho Married." We are both fully devoted to God and entirely devoted to each other, and we are experiencing a life with God that neither of us thought possible. We live, love, and laugh together every day! The relationship we have together would not be possible without our individual and joint relationship with the Father.
The marriage relationship is a holy covenant between a husband and wife, and a strong marriage must be built on a sincere relationship with God. Psalm 127:1 says, “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.” This is an apt analogy for marriage: the Lord is the foundation of the house; a strong foundation is necessary for a strong marriage.

Just as a house made of bricks and mortar must have a solid foundation to be strong, so too must marriage be built on a strong relationship with God. When a husband and wife keep their focus on God, with Him at the center of their relationship, their marriage will be strong and steadfast. As Luke 6:47-49 says, “Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.” When a married couple puts God first in their relationship and lives by His word, their marriage is solid and unshakeable even when hardships come their way.

The beauty of a marriage based on a relationship with God is that it brings a divine dimension to the marriage. His love operating in the hearts of a husband and wife brings a level of love and understanding that could not be achieved without Him. When a couple acts in love and understanding towards each other, with God at the center of their relationship, their love for each other is stronger, purer, and more enduring than any other kind of love.
Keeping God at the center of a marriage is essential for a strong marriage. When a couple puts God first in their relationship, His love will fill their hearts and move their relationship beyond the physical and into the spiritual. With God in the center, a couple’s love for each other will be unshakeable, and their marriage will be solid and lasting. ©Rita Larson 5/5/2023
