As a Christian, it is important to understand the symbolism of the crown in the Bible. The crown of thorns that Jesus bore was one of sin and disgrace. He bore this crown so that we would not have to. When we see reference to gaining a crown in heaven, this crown signifies position, power, and reward. Revelation 3:11, says to "Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown." This verse is significant because it reveals that there is a crown that believers can attain and that there is a danger of losing it. Unlike the crown Jesus bore so that we wouldn't have to, this crown represents the position of authority and ruling power that believers have on Earth and in Heaven. It is a symbol of honor and reward for those who have been faithful to God.

In the Old Testament, the crown was worn by kings and rulers as a sign of their authority over their kingdom. In the New Testament, the crown is a symbol of victory, righteousness, and holiness. The crown has a direct correlation to our identity and who we are in Christ. What does it mean when we reference our identity in Christ? To know who we are in Christ, we must look to the Scriptures.
In Philippians 2:9-11, "Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." This is our Master and whom we are called to serve and with whom we are joint-heirs with!
Romans 8:17 tells us "And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together."
In Colossians 2:10, we are told that we are complete in Christ. There is nothing that we can do to make ourselves more acceptable in the sight of God. We are complete in Him.
In Ephesians 2:10, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” We are created in Christ for a purpose. We are His workmanship and He has prepared good works for us to do.
Hebrews 12:1-2 says, "Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith."

James 1:12 says, "Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him."
1 John 3:1 tells us we are children of God
1 John 4:17 says, “Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world.” This verse tells us that we are perfect in love because we are in Christ. We have boldness in the day of judgment because we are in Christ and have been given His power and authority.

So, what is the significance of the crown in relation to our identity in Christ? The crown is a symbol of the position, power, and reward we have in Christ and the authority we have in Him. We have been called to accomplish the good works He has prepared for us to do. We cannot get to heaven thru works, the only way to salvation is through acknowledgment of the blood of Jesus and accepting Christ as our personal Savior. Ephesiains 2:8-9 states "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." However, while we are here on earth, we are called to spread the good news and do the work of our Heavenly Father.
Our crown symbolizes honor and reward for being faithful to God and it is a reminder of the power and authority we have in Him. We are children of God, joint heirs to Christ, and through the blood of Jesus, we can each have a special relationship with Him. Remember who you are, where you came from, and where you are going! Most importantly, hold on to your crown! Do not allow others to rob you and take your crown! ©Rita Larson 7/17/2023
