I was speaking with a friend last week and we were talking about relationships and in reference to his spouse, he shared with me one thing that his spouse says to him that "drives him crazy." He said he hates when they look at him and say "I am but a mirror". To put it in context, if they are having a dispute and his spouse has an attitude and he addresses it, they respond "I am but a mirror". This makes me think about our own attitude and behaviors and how it impacts those around us. I want to be the mirror that people look at and see the love of the Father in my eyes!

Love one another is a direct reflection of God's love and how He loves us. The importance of loving your neighbor is a central tenant of living a Godly life. Galatians 5:14 is a key scripture that illustrates this point. saying, “For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” In this passage, Paul is reminding us of the importance of loving one another, as it is a reflection of God’s love. He is also telling us that when we love our neighbor, we are glorifying God. This is a command that can be found throughout the Bible. In Luke 10:27, Jesus reiterates the importance of loving one’s neighbor when he says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself.” Loving our neighbor is an essential part of our relationship with God.
The Bible is full of examples that exemplify the call to love your neighbor. I am reminded of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37). This is a powerful illustration when Jesus tells the parable of a man travelling from Jerusalem to Jericho who is robbed and left for dead. Two men, a priest and a Levite, pass by, but do not stop to help. However, the third man, a Samaritan, stops, takes pity on the man, and goes out of his way to help him. Jesus then asks the question, “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?" The Samaritan’s actions are a beautiful example of the love and compassion we should have for one another.

In Romans 12:9-10, we are reminded that “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” This tells us clearly what we should be reflecting to one another. We don't want people to look at us and see hatred and evil. When we cling to what is good, that is what they will see when they look at us. When we live treating each other with honor and respect, those around us will see the beauty in that when they look at us! We devote ourselves to what we love. For example, because of my love for the Father and my love for others, that is why you have this blog to read at this moment. I want to be a reflection of the love of the Father, and I want that to be seen and spread in every single person that reads my writings.
Romans 12:13, which says, “Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.” This is a call for us to open our homes and hearts to others, to show hospitality. We should put forth effort to go out of our way to show love and kindness to those around us. It can be a small act of kindness, like holding the door open for someone, or it can be a larger act, like volunteering or helping someone. Either way, when we take the time to show love and compassion to our others, we are glorifying God and setting an example for others to follow.

In 1 Peter 4:10, we are reminded that we should “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” By using our gifts to help others, we are showing God’s love. My husband and I seek out opportunities to try and be a blessing to someone else, whether it is just being an ear and giving a word of encouragement, manual labor to help with a need, or helping with a financial need if we are able. Again, we want to be a reflection of the Father's love. He has been so good to us in so many areas, we want His goodness to be seen in us and spread like a wildfire!

When you look in the mirror, who do you see? Just as you can change your hair and throw on some make up; you can change how others see the reflection of your heart. We are commanded to love one another. By being the example that we are called to be, we can be a mirror and show God’s love to the world around us. When others look at us and see Jesus, we glorify Him in the process. We are showing the world the power of Godly love and all that it can do. Each and every one of us should be saying "I am but a mirror!" ©Rita Larson 4/20/2023
