"I Am Seen!"

We were at a praise and worship night at church last night, and the Pastor asked people to share a single word that was on their hearts. One of the teens who happens to be near and dear to me, Maddie, spoke up and said "Seen." Understanding what she meant, this really struck me. It reminded me of a revelation I had gotten about being "seen" by God. El Roi is a Hebrew name for our God, meaning the God who sees me.

We discover this name of God in Genesis 16, where we are introduced to God as El Roi, the God who sees me. In Genesis 16:13, Hagar, a maidservant who had been mistreated by her mistress Sarai, encounters God in a profound way. She exclaims, "You are the God who sees me." In that moment, Hagar experienced the overwhelming love and care of her Creator, who saw her in her distress and came to her aid. This encounter reminds us that we serve a God who not only sees us but knows every detail of our circumstances.

It is easy to feel alone and insignificant in this vast world. We may question if anyone truly sees us or understands what we are going through. But the truth is, we are never alone. Our heavenly Father sees us and loves us unconditionally. In Matthew 10:30, Jesus reassures us that even the hairs on our heads are numbered by God. This demonstrates His intimate knowledge and care for every aspect of our lives. We matter to Him.

When we pray to our Father, we are praying to El Roi, who sees us and who knows everything about us. He sees our joys and sorrows, our triumphs and struggles. Psalm 56:8 beautifully expresses this truth: "You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book." Our tears are not unseen or forgotten by God. He collects them tenderly, acknowledging our pain and offering His comfort.

Knowing that God sees us gives us hope and reassurance in the midst of challenging circumstances. In Psalm 139:1-3, David declares, "O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I'm far away." Our circumstances may be overwhelming, but El Roi is intimately acquainted with every detail. He sees beyond what is visible to us and understands the inner workings of our hearts.

El Roi, the God who sees me, is a powerful reminder of God's intimate knowledge and love for each one of us. We are never alone; God sees us in our joys and sorrows, counts our every tear, and knows every detail of our circumstances. As we pray to El Roi, let us remember that we are known by name and that our heavenly Father cares deeply for every aspect of our lives. We are seen and loved by the God who numbers the hairs on our heads and counts our every tear. We are seen! ©Rita Larson 9/7/2023
