"Let's go for a Walk!'

In Luke 24, we read the story of Jesus and the two men, one named Cleopas, walking to Emmaus following the knowledge of Jesus’ crucifixion and then being told that the tomb was open and His body was gone. Their faces were “downcast” (v. 17), indicating that they were troubled and discouraged. I imagine they were feeling heavily grieved, very heartsick, and hopeless.

As they walked along, reminiscing over the past few days, Jesus came alongside them, yet “they were kept from recognizing him” (Luke 24: 16). When Jesus asked what they were discussing, they explained their version of the past days’ events, including when Jesus was crucified. They were filled with disappointment and confusion. After all, they had placed their hope in Jesus, who they thought was now gone.

As they walked on further, Jesus explained the Old Testament stories and how they ultimately pointed to Jesus Christ. Despite this, the men still did not recognize that Jesus was speaking to them. Gently, Jesus said to them in Luke 24:25-27, “Then He said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.” Jesus is often with us, speaking to us, yet we do not recognize Him or hear His voice.

When they get to Emmaus, they invite Jesus, their mystery companion, to stay with them instead of continuing on His journey, and Jesus agrees. Finally, when Jesus gives thanks and breaks the bread with them at the table, they recognize Him. Immediately, Jesus disappears, and they rush back to Jerusalem that evening, find the 11 apostles, and tell them what happened.

Jesus is always with us. He has promised to never leave us nor forsake us. We have the Holy Spirit living inside of us! It is easy to feel like we are on our own sometimes. Yet, we must have ears to hear His voice and eyes open to seeing and understanding His Word. By being vigilant and taking the time to focus, we can gain a greater understanding of how Jesus speaks and reveals Himself to us and through us each and every day! ©Rita Larson 4/11/2023
