This picture is of the Clymene Moth, also known as the Blessing Moth, because of the beautiful sign of the cross on its folded wings. I had never seen one before seeing the picture my brother texted me this morning. While talking on the phone, he went on to share the significance of seeing this moth and the timing of it. After learning that Brian and I were stuck in Israel trying to find a way home, my mom and my brother took a moment and prayed together, asking God for our safe return home. Moments later, my mom came across this moth on the back porch. To my mom and brother, God was speaking to them, reassuring them that we would be okay. If God can use a donkey, a horse, and a rooster, He certainly can use a moth to communicate a message of hope!

Hearing the voice of God is essential in our relationship with Him. We are invited to go deeper in our relationship with Him, and the depth of that relationship is determined by our willingness to seek Him. In John 10:27, Jesus says, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” In this scripture, Jesus speaks of the connection between Him and His sheep. He is saying that His sheep recognize His voice and follow Him. In order to hear His voice, we have to listen. We have to open our hearts and minds and be willing to hear His voice and actually listen to what He is saying.

As believers, we must all learn to recognize God’s voice and follow His instructions. We must be attentive to His voice and open to His guidance. But how do we do this? We can begin by reading His Word, meditating on it, and applying it to our lives. 2 Corinthians 13:5 says, “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?” Examining ourselves is the first step in recognizing God’s voice. We must be honest with ourselves, listen to the guidance we receive from the Holy Spirit, and know how to respond to God’s Word.
Developing a deeper relationship with God teaches us to humble ourselves and accept His authority. Psalm 29:4 says, “The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.” We must trust that God will speak to us in ways we might not expect. John 14:26 says, “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” God can and will communicate with us in a variety of ways. We must be willing to listen! God’s voice is not limited to the Bible. He will use various means to communicate with us, including dreams, visions, and other supernatural experiences. Be open and learn to recognize the voice of the Father!

Ultimately, our relationship with God is rooted in our willingness to seek Him and listen to His voice. We must be attentive to His Word and open to His guidance. Trust that God will speak to us in ways we might not expect, even through a moth. Our call to action is to desire a deepening of our relationship with God and hear His voice. When we develop a more intimate relationship with Him, He will speak to us, and it may be in an unexpected way. We must be willing to humble ourselves, listen, and accept His authority. In order to hear His voice, we have to listen! ©Rita Larson 10/17/023
