Mystery of the Scarlet Thread

ree

I was making my bed today and, as I was putting on the bedspread, I began to think about the beautiful quilts my Grandma used to make. She used to hand-stitch some of the most creative and unique quilts you could imagine. I have always been amazed at the strength in the tiny thread used to hold a quilt together. The thread, stitched around every piece of material, holds it in place and creates such a beautiful masterpiece. With that, I am reminded of the Scarlet Thread of Redemption, and the Masterpiece that was created.

The Scarlet Thread of Redemption is a beautiful reminder of God's never-ending love for us. This thread, which runs from Genesis 3:15 to the cross of Calvary, is a reminder of the promise of salvation and redemption that is made available to all who believe in Jesus Christ. In the beginning, God promised that a Savior would come who would destroy the works of satan and bring salvation to His people (Genesis 3:15). Throughout the Old Testament, we see this promise echoed as the scarlet thread is seen in the sacrificial offerings of lambs and bulls, which ultimately point to the death of Jesus on the cross. All of the animal sacrifices, promises of future rest, promises of future victory, and covenant promises of salvation all point to Jesus—the only one who could truly fulfill them.

As the Good Shepherd, Jesus laid down His life for His sheep, a gift of unending grace and mercy that is made available to all who believe in Him (John 3:16). In 1 Peter 1:18-19, Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God, without any blemish, died on the cross to satisfy every debt or wage of sin, paying our ransom so that we could have eternal life with the Father. As Romans 3:24 tells us, our justification is by faith in His blood, for without the shedding of blood, there is no remission. He is the "Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). Jesus is the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep (John 10:11).

As Resurrection Day (Easter) approaches, let’s really think about The Scarlet Thread of Redemption and how it is woven so intrinsically throughout the life and teachings of Christ. Let this scarlet thread remind us that we are loved and accepted by God and that our true hope and salvation is found in Jesus Christ. He alone is the fulfillment of every covenant promise of salvation, and He alone is the blueprint of God’s redemptive plan. Rejoice and behold the beautiful Scarlet Thread of Redemption as we celebrate the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior in the coming weeks! ©Rita Larson 3/27/2023
