"Open The Eyes of My Heart"

God loves each and every one of us and cares for us, no matter what wrongdoing we have done. Luke 6:41, "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest, not the beam that is in thine own eye?" Jesus teaches us not to be so worried about other people’s sins that we forget our own. We often overlook our own mistakes and sins by focusing on the small “specks” in other people’s eyes and pointing out their flaws.

When it comes to looking at other’s mistakes, it is easy to forget our own. We tend to point out the small issues in other’s lives when we have bigger issues of our own. We need to remember our own “logs” when we feel like criticizing, and then we will realize we have little to say.

The bible warns us about this behavior in several different scriptures. Similarly, Matthew 7:3-5 says “And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.” This scripture again reminds us that we should not be too quick to judge the mistakes of others when we have our own to take care of.

What we should be quick to do, is be quick to forgive. In Matthew 6:14-15, Jesus says, “For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” This scripture reminds us that we should be forgiving of the mistakes of others, and it also reminds us that God will forgive us when we repent and ask for forgiveness.

We must remember that we all make mistakes and that no one is perfect. We must not be so quick to judge the mistakes of others and instead focus on our own. We must also remember to forgive others, just as we want to be forgiven. Remember to be quick to turn to God and ask for forgiveness, and He will forgive us. Ask Him to open the eyes of our own hearts, to reveal those things that we need to correct.

Let us pray for eyes to be opened to our own faults and for the humility to admit our mistakes. May we turn away from pride and be honest with God about our wrongs. We ask for forgiveness and the grace to be kind and understanding to those around us on their own journeys. In Jesus’ name, Amen. ©Rita Larson 10/22/2023
