The saying "Sticks and Stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me" may have been intended to provide comfort or resilience in the face of verbal attacks, but the reality is quite different. Words have tremendous power to hurt deeply, causing emotional pain that can last far longer than physical wounds. In fact, words have the potential to destroy relationships and leave lasting scars on the heart. It is, therefore, crucial for us to heed the advice of Psalm 141:3, which states, "Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips." This verse reminds us to be mindful of our words and to guard our mouths against speaking harmful or hurtful things.

As believers, we are called to use our words to encourage and uplift those around us. Proverbs 16:24 tells us, "Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body." When we speak with kindness and encouragement, we have the power to bring life and blessings into the lives of others. Our words can be a source of comfort, inspiration, and hope. They can build bridges, strengthen bonds, and mend broken hearts. Just as a little kindness goes a long way in our daily interactions, so too does the power of our words have a profound impact on the lives of those we encounter.
In order to fulfill this calling and wield our words wisely, we must first recognize the significance of our words in the eyes of God. In Matthew 12:36-37, Jesus says, "I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned." Our words matter to God because they reflect the condition of our hearts. When we speak with love and compassion, we align ourselves with God's heart and bring glory to Him. Conversely, when our words are filled with negativity or malice, we grieve the Holy Spirit and hinder our relationship with Him.

God himself sets an example for us when it comes to the power of words. In Genesis 1, we see that God spoke the world into existence. He spoke light into darkness, order into chaos, and life into existence. Just as God used his words to bring about creation, we too can use our words to bring about positive change in our lives and the lives of those around us.
Therefore, let us be intentional in choosing our words wisely. Let us use them to build up rather than tear down, to encourage rather than criticize, and to bring healing rather than pain. As we do so, we not only honor God but also foster healthy relationships that are characterized by love and grace. Remember the power of our words and strive to speak life into others. In doing so, we can make a positive difference in the lives of others and reflect the love and goodness of our Heavenly Father. ©Rita Larson 9/12/2023
