"Trouble Sleeping?"

We all experience anxiety and worry at some point in our lives. It’s part of being human. However, when these feelings start to spiral out of control, it can be a sign that the enemy is trying to attack us. In order to prevent this attack, we need to take our thoughts captive and rebuke the devil in the name of Jesus.

For example, there are times I have trouble sleeping at night because I find myself worried about all the things I have to do the next day. As I lay in bed, my thoughts sometimes begin to run wild, and if not carefully, my worries turn to fear. It is easy to start to feel overwhelmed and paralyzed. When this happens, there are steps that we can take to get control of our thoughts.

The first step is to call out the name of Jesus. When we call out the name of Jesus, the enemy has to flee. Philippians 2:10-11 states, "That at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." The power of Jesus’ name is so strong that it can cause the devil to retreat and the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of us to rise up. With Jesus’ name on our lips, we can take our thoughts captive and not allow them to be an open door for the enemy.

The second step is to focus on the Word of God. Psalm 30:5 reminds us "Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him." The Word of God is armor, protecting us from the enemy and leading us in the right direction. We can take our thoughts captive by focusing on the promises of God. We can find comfort in the truth of His Word and let it guide us away from worry and fear.

The third step is to pray. When we pray, we connect with God and open ourselves up to the Holy Spirit and His guidance. We can ask Him to give us strength to take our thoughts captive and to rebuke the enemy in Jesus’ name. Corinthians 10:5, “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” This verse tells us that we can take our thoughts captive and bring them into obedience to Christ. Mark 11:24 assures us, stating, "Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them."

Isaiah 41:10 says, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” This verse reminds us that God is always with us, and He will give us the strength we need to take our thoughts captive and rebuke the enemy in the name of Jesus.

Romans 8:15 says, “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” This verse reminds us that we have been adopted into God’s family, and He is our loving Father. When we call out to Him, He will give us the courage to take our thoughts captive and to rebuke the devil.

Psalm 34:4 says, “I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.” This verse reminds us that God is always with us, and He will provide us with the strength to take our thoughts captive and to turn away from fear.

Finally, Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” This verse reminds us to focus on the positive and to think on those things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable.

We all experience anxiety and worry at some point in our lives, but when these feelings start to overwhelm us, we can take our thoughts captive and rebuke the enemy in the name of Jesus. We can call out His name and trust in His power, focus on the promises of His Word, and pray for His guidance and discernment. As we do this, we can find comfort in the truth of His Word and stand firm against the lies of the enemy.

Prayer:

Lord, I am aware of the power that lies in our thoughts and how they can often lead us astray. But today, I am determined to cast down every thought that does not align with your truth. I choose to take captive every negative thought, every fear, and every anxiety that tries to consume me.

Lord, you have not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind. I declare that fear has no place in my life. I surrender it all to you, knowing that you are greater than any fear that may try to hold me back. Holy Spirit, I invite you into my thought life. Guide me, convict me, and help me to discern when thoughts are not of you. I want my mind to be a place where your truth reigns supreme.

Jesus, you are my ultimate example of how to take thoughts captive. In the face of temptation and doubt, you spoke words of truth and defeated the enemy. I pray for that same boldness and strength in my own life. Help me to replace worry with trust, fear with faith, and anxiety with peace that surpasses all understanding.

Lord, I know that taking my thoughts captive is not a one-time event but a daily process. So, I ask for your grace and strength to persevere. Empower me to surrender my thoughts to you continually and to fill my mind with your word. May my thoughts be pleasing to you, and may they align with your perfect will for my life. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen. ©Rita Larson 10/30/2023
