"Trying My Patience"

I am sitting in the airport and have now been delayed for over 2 hours. I am tired, frustrated, and just want to be home. The week has been challenging and am looking forward to getting home. I hit heavy traffic in Atlanta trying to get to the airport. After going through long lines and hustling, I get to the gate to find out my flight has been delayed. I feel myself becoming increasingly frustrated and start reminding myself to have patience! While all of these things are trying my patience, I know that God is my source of perfect peace!

The Bible refers to patience as one of the fruits of the spirit. Galatians 5:22-23 states “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Longsuffering here is another word for patience. This scripture is a reminder that patience is not only important but also a necessary part of the Christian walk.
Other scriptures that reference patience can be found in James 1:2-4 which states “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” This scripture reminds us that we are going to face difficult times. We are going to have frustrating days, but having patience is key to overcoming our adversaries.
Other scriptures that reference patience are Romans 5:3-4 which states “And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope.” This scripture encourages us to remain patient in times of trouble, as we work through our difficulties, it will give us strength and greater hope in God.

Ephesians 4:2-3 also speaks about patience, stating “With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” We are to be patient with one another and to keep the peace in any situation.
Finally, Colossians 3:12-13 states “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.” This scripture encourages us to be patient and forgiving towards one another.
No matter what is trying our patience, we need to take a step back and breathe, and trust God that His timing is perfect timing. Patience is a necessary part of the Christian walk. God is in control and He is faithful and we can trust that what He said He will do. We must learn to be patient and to wait on Him.
Lord, we thank You for Your faithfulness and Your perfect timing. We know that You are in control of all things and that You will never leave us nor forsake us. We ask for Your grace and mercy as we put on patience in our daily lives. Please help us to trust You and to wait on You. We love You and we honor You. In Jesus’ name, Amen. ©Rita Larson 7/12/2023
