I love the song "Cornerstone" by Hillsong Worship. Take a minute to watch the song at (107) Cornerstone - Hillsong - YouTube and really pay attention to the lyrics. Have you ever thought about the true definition of a Cornerstone?
When constructing a foundation, the main (Chief) Cornerstone is the most essential part of the structural layout and build. The cornerstone is the first stone that is placed and from here, all other stones are aligned and positioned, supporting the entire structure. If the Chief cornerstone was place and was not leveled or perfectly square with even a very slight angle, the entire structure would end up out of balance. If it would slant, even in the slightest, it would be at risk of collapsing. The Chief Cornerstone represents the strength, foundation, and support of the entire structure.

Acts 4:11, referring to Jesus, tells us “This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.” Acts 4:12 reminds us that “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved”. If you build your life with Jesus as the Chief Cornerstone, setting building blocks of faith upon the Chief Cornerstone, faith in Jesus Christ will be your strength, foundation, and support to get you through anything life brings your way.

In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus compares a wise man who builds his house upon a rock to one who builds a house on sand. When storms come, the house built on a rock will not fall because it is built on a firm foundation. However, the house built on sand will fall because the foundation washes out. This is symbolic of how we should align our lives with Jesus. If we do not make Jesus Christ our Chief Cornerstone and the basis for our firm foundation, it is like building our house on sinking sand.
In Isaiah 28:16-17, it says, “Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.” This verse again reminds us that Jesus is our sure foundation, and that those who believe in Him will not be shaken. We can rely on His promises and His faithfulness. As we build our lives on Him and His Word, He will provide us with the strength, support, and security that we need.
As for me and my house, Jesus is the only Cornerstone upon which my life will be built. He is the only foundation on which I will stand firm. When seasons come and the storms keep pouring, I will put my trust in Him. He has never failed me. He has never disappointed me. He never will. My God is able to do all things. Jesus Christ alone, my Chief Cornerstone! ©Rita Larson 3/28/2023
