"Who's Your Daddy?"

Today I spent time thinking about my Dad and missing him terribly, as I often do. My Dad was always there for me. I knew I could always depend on my Dad. As a child if my brother would tease me, I would say "I am going to tell Daddy!" When the day came that he left this earth, I felt lost, wondering how I would survive without his love and protection. While I always thought I understood God's sovereignty and what it meant, it wasn't until I lost my earthly father that I really began to see who my Heavenly Father is and how much He loves me.

The word "sovereign" carries with it the connotation of being "superior," "greatest," "supreme in power and authority," "ruler," and "independent of all others." "Sovereign" is used to describe God's absolute power and authority over the universe. God's sovereignty is the attribute that refers to His supreme power and authority over everything that exists. As the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, God reigns with all authority. We see this throughout scripture:

  • God is above all things and before all things. He is the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end (Revelation 1:8).

  • God created all things and holds all things together, both in heaven and on earth, both visible and invisible (Colossians 1:16).

  • God knows all things past, present, and future. There is no limit to His knowledge, for God knows everything completely before it even happens (Psalm 139:1-4).

  • God can do all things and accomplish all things. Nothing is too difficult for Him, and He orchestrates and determines everything that is going to happen in your life, in my life, and throughout the world (Jeremiah 32:17).

  • God is in control of all things and rules over all things. He has power and authority over nature, earthly kings, history, angels, and demons (Psalm 103:19).

There are also several illustrations that God's sovereignty makes Him, and Him alone, all-powerful and worthy of all our praise. Here are some specific examples of His power on display throughout the bible.

  1. God's omnipotence in creation: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). God is the Creator of everything that exists, visible and invisible. His power is unlimited and unmatched.

  2. God's control over nature: Jesus demonstrated His sovereignty over nature when He calmed the storm (Mark 4:39) and when He walked on water (Matthew 14:25). These miracles show that God is All-Powerful and has authority over all the natural elements.

  3. God's authority over earthly rulers: Daniel 2:21 says, "And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings." God has ultimate authority and the power to raise up and remove rulers according to His will.

  4. God's power over life and death: In 2 Kings 4:32-35, the prophet Elisha raises a young boy from the dead by the power of God. Other instances included Lazarus being raised from the dead, Jesus raising the daughter of Jarius from the dead, amongst others, but the ultimate was the raising of Jesus from the dead! Praise God! This miracle demonstrates God's sovereignty over life and death.

  5. God's authority over angels and demons: In Job 1:12, "And the Lord said unto satan, Behold all that he hath is in thy power, only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So satan went forth from the presence of the Lord." Satan had to ask God's permission before he could act against Job. Mark 3:11, "And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before Him and cried saying, Thou art the Son of God". Luke 4:41, "And devils also came out of many, crying and saying "Thou art Christ the Son of God. And He rebuking them suffered them not to speak; for the knew that He was Christ." All of these examples demonstrates God's authority!

God, with all of His Sovereignty, is our very own Loving Father. From the miracles He performed in the Bible to the daily workings of our lives, God's power and authority are evident and never ceasing, With the power to create anything, we were uniquely and lovingly created by Him in His image! We were perfected and designed to His personal liking. When we understand this and submit to His sovereignty, we can really begin to see who He is! We can confidently and boldly approach His Throne of Grace knowing He hears us, He loves us, and He works all things for our good (Hebrews 4:16).

Take the time to truly embrace the sovereignty of God, knowing that He is our All-Powerful, Loving Father, who has called us by name in our mother's womb (Psalm 139:13), numbered the hairs on our head (Matthew 10:30), and made us a royal priesthood and a chosen generation (1 Peter 2:9). In the name of Jesus, let us worship and serve our sovereign God, trusting in His infallible Word and His unending and never-failing love for us! When we are feeling lost or alone, we just need to look in the mirror and ask ourselves, "Who's your Daddy?" Run to the Father with arms wide open. We serve a Mighty God, and there is nothing that our Father cannot do! Praise the Lord! Hallelujah! ©Rita Larson 5/26/2023
