We live in a society that has spent centuries defining beauty as what is seen on the outside. From the earliest days of cave drawings to the modern-day airbrushed magazine covers, beauty has been defined as an external quality. But the Bible tells us a different story. 1 Timothy 2:9-10 says, “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.”

Beauty is not just a physical quality. God looks at the heart and the beauty within it. 1 Peter 3:3-5 explains, “Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time, the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands.”
True beauty is not about what we look like on the outside, but rather, what’s inside our hearts. Our society has placed so much emphasis on looks and material possessions that it can be easy to forget this truth. We need to take a step back and remember that God looks at the beauty of our hearts.

God looks at beauty differently than the world. He sees beauty in the heart, in the character of an individual, in the way they show love to others, and in the good works they do. We need to look at others and see their beauty from within, as well as look at ourselves and see our true beauty the way God does. We can no longer allow society to dictate to us what beauty should look like. We must look past the physical features of others and focus on the beauty that comes from within. This means looking beyond the physical and seeing the beauty of the heart, looking at the spirit, mind, and soul. We should celebrate the uniqueness of every individual, no matter what they look like on the outside.
We need to look at ourselves and others with love and compassion, recognizing the beauty that comes from within. When we look at the world through God’s eyes, we can see the beauty of every individual and appreciate them for who they are. We can celebrate their unique qualities and embrace their beauty, both inside and out. ©Rita Larson 8/11/2023
