Fall is upon us and it starting to cool down. When it gets cool and the leaves start changing, we begin to think about those things that bring us comfort in the cool weather such as a bonfire, hot chocolate, pumpkin spice, and snuggling up. We start thinking more about comfort foods. We may get out the flannel sheets and throw a bigger comforter on our bed. A comforter is a big warm blanket that you can just wrap around you and suddenly you feel warm and cozy. We also have another Comforter, the Holy Spirit who wants us to rely on Him for comfort and support as well as recognize Him as our source of Truth.

John 15:26 reads, "But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:" Jesus reveals two significant names for the Holy Spirit: The Comforter and the Spirit of Truth. The choice of these names is not accidental, but rather intentional in conveying the multifaceted nature of the Holy Spirit's work in our lives. The term Comforter portrays the Spirit as a helper, encourager, and strengthener, providing solace and support in times of need. This comforting presence brings a sense of peace and assurance, reminding us that we are never alone. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that we find comfort in our trials and tribulations, knowing that He is with us every step of the way.

Moreover, the Holy Spirit is also referred to as the Spirit of Truth. John 14:17 also emphasizes this, stating "Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you." The Holy Spirit is only available when we accept Jesus as our personal savior. The Bible tells us we are then in this world but not of this world. Only by knowing the Father do you get this access. The title, Spirit of Truth, highlights the teaching, illuminating, and reminding role that the Spirit plays in our lives. Through His divine guidance, the Spirit reveals the truth of God's Word to us, opening our minds to understand and apply its principles in our daily lives. It is through the Spirit's work that we are able to gain deeper insights into God's truth and experience spiritual growth. The Spirit of Truth guides us in discerning right from wrong, leading us on a path of righteousness and holiness.
The Holy Spirit ministers to both our intellect and our emotions, reaching both our head and our heart. His teachings not only enlighten our minds but also touch our hearts, transforming us from within. This transformative power of the Holy Spirit enables us to experience true spiritual growth and maturity. Through His presence within us, we are empowered to live a life that is pleasing to God and fruitful in every aspect.

The phrase "proceedeth from the Father" emphasizes the origin of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not self-derived but comes from the very essence of the Father. 1 John 5:7 states, "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one." Here, The Word represents Jesus, the eternal Word of God made flesh. This scripture signifies the unity and harmony within the Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As believers, we know that the Holy Spirit comes from God Himself, ensuring His divine authority and power in our lives.
Finally, it is important to note that the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us when we are born again. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we receive the gift of salvation and are filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit. This indwelling marks a profound transformation in our lives as we are united with God Himself. The Holy Spirit becomes our constant companion, guiding and instilling us with power that enables us to live a life that honors God.
John 15:26 reveals the beautiful and intricate nature of the Holy Spirit's work in our lives. As the Comforter, He brings solace and strength in times of need. As the Spirit of Truth, He teaches and guides us into all truth. The Holy Spirit ministers to both our head and heart, transforming us from within. His power and authority come from God Himself. And through faith in Jesus Christ, we receive the gift of His indwelling presence. Let us embrace the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives and allow Him to lead and guide us on this incredible journey of faith. ©Rita Larson 10/2/2023
