Have you ever had one of those days when you looked in the mirror and just thought to yourself, “Wow, I look like a mess today?” Today was one of those days for me. I just felt out of place and was reminded of the Charlie Brown Christmas tree. In the classic Peanuts Christmas movie, Charlie Brown is tasked with finding the perfect Christmas tree. He goes out into the woods and finds what looks like a small, withered, and almost dead tree. This tree is a bedraggled thing that no one would call beautiful. In the eyes of Charlie Brown, when it is decorated with lights and ornaments, it becomes a thing of beauty. When no one else saw the beauty in it, it was the one so beautiful to Charlie Brown that he brought home. Just like the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree, we may not see beauty in ourselves. In fact, we may look at ourselves and wince knowing what is on the inside. The truth is, when we don’t see our own beauty, God does. He sees us as we are and as we were created to be! We were all created beautifully in His very image.

We have all heard of the all-seeing eyes of God. But what does this really mean, and what insight can it give us into the nature of our loving Creator? In Hebrews 4:13, we read: “Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.” This verse speaks to us, reminding us that we serve a God who is ever-present, all-knowing, and all-seeing.
The all-seeing eyes of God are a reminder to us that God is with us always, even when we may be unaware of His presence. God knows all of our secrets, all of our thoughts, all of our actions, and yet He still loves us. This is a remarkable truth and one that we should embrace. We can never hide from or outrun the love of God. His love is always there, surrounding us, even when we cannot see it.

In addition to Hebrews 4:13, there are several other passages in the Bible that speak of the power and all-knowing nature of God. In 1 John 3:20, we read: “For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.“ In Psalm 139:1-6, we are reminded that “O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising; thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.” Lastly, in Proverbs 15:3, we are told that “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.”
These verses remind us that God is always watching us and knows what is in our hearts. He knows our thoughts and our actions, and yet His love for us never changes. No matter what we may have said, done, or thought, God still loves us. He sees our beauty, even when we are feeling ugly inside. He is always with us, and He knows us better than we know ourselves. He sees us as we are, and He still loves us. He loves us, regardless of our mistakes, how we look, or how we feel. Even if we are having a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree day, dress up, show up, and let the light of God shine! ©Rita Larson 11/28/2023
