"Light Of The World"

The Christmas season is a time of joy, celebration, and reflection. Every year, as we decorate our homes with decorations and lights, many of us reflect on why God sent a star to lead people to Jesus on the first Christmas. Matthew 2:9 says "When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was." This star, which shone brightly in the night sky, was a sign of the great hope that was promised in the birth of Jesus.

The star that beckoned the Wise Men to travel to Bethlehem was a miracle that showed the power and majesty of God. While it was miraculous in and of itself, it also serves as a reminder of the light of Jesus that guides us in our lives. As Jesus said in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Just as the star led the Wise Men to Jesus, we should look to Jesus as our guide and allow Him to be the light of our path.

The Bible is full of verses that remind us of the importance of looking to Jesus for guidance. In Isaiah 9:2, “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” This verse is a reminder that Jesus is our light in the darkness, and that He will lead us out of the darkness and into the light.

In addition, Psalm 119:105 tells us, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” This verse reminds us that we should follow the Word of God as our guide to stay on the path of righteousness and truth. Jesus is the living Word of God, and when we follow His teachings, He will light our path and lead us in the right direction.

Finally, 1 John 1:5 tells us, “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.” This verse is a reminder that God is the source of all light, and that we should look to Him for guidance. When we follow God, we will never be in darkness, but will always have the light of life.

The star that shone over Bethlehem on the first Christmas was a sign of the hope and joy that was promised in the birth of Jesus. As we reflect on why God sent a star to lead people to Jesus on the first Christmas, we should remember the words of Jesus in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Just as the North Star was the guide for the Wise Men and led them straight to Jesus, we should look to Jesus as our guiding light and let Him light our path to follow Him. ©Rita Larson 12/5/2023
