"Marriage: Building the Kingdom"

Updated: Aug 9, 2023

Today, is our four-year anniversary from the time Brian and I met. It still seems like yesterday! I still look at Brian and say "I cannot believe I married that guy who asked me to dance 4 years ago!" From the time we met, we have been "dancing" ever since! It is amazing how things change when you begin walking in God's plan for your life! Our marriage is truly a gift from God, and I am so grateful that we get the opportunity to serve God together, as one.

Marriage is a beautiful gift from God - it is a blessing to be a couple designed by Him to help build His kingdom. God created marriage for a purpose – to build His kingdom. In Genesis 1:28, God told Adam and Eve to “be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth." This was God’s command to the first couple – to rule the earth and be stewards of His creation.

God’s design for marriage doesn’t stop there. In the New Testament, marriage is described as a spiritual gift given to build up the body of Christ and to advance his kingdom. In 1 Corinthians 7:7, Paul taught that “each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another” (KJV). This means that each couple has unique gifts and a unique way God has called them to build His kingdom.

We can see this in action in action throughout scripture in the Bible. Abraham and Sarah were called to build God’s kingdom by becoming a nation of people devoted to him. Joseph and Mary were called to build God’s kingdom by raising Jesus and introducing him to the world. And Jesus and His disciples were called to build God’s kingdom by teaching the world about the kingdom of God.

So, how is God calling you as a couple to build His kingdom? Take time to listen and to prayerfully consider how the two of you can serve Him and build His kingdom together. Be creative and prayerful, and trust that God will provide the opportunities that He has for you. Are you called to serve in a church? Are you called to mentor other couples? Are you called to serve in a ministry? Are you called to share your faith with others? Whatever God is calling you to do, it’s important to be obedient and to take action.

Again, as you consider how God is calling you to build his kingdom, it’s important to pray for guidance and wisdom. Ask God to bless your marriage and to use you both to build His kingdom. Pray for strength and courage to take the steps needed to obey God’s call.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the beautiful gift of marriage. We are grateful for the chance to be a couple designed by You to help build Your kingdom. We ask that You would give us wisdom and discernment to understand how we can serve You together. Help us to be a powerful tool in Your hands to bring glory and honor to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen. ©Rita Larson 6/22/2023
