As Christmas approaches, many of us can’t help but be reminded of the story of Jesus’ birth. When a young Mary was expecting her firstborn son, she had to endure the difficult task of finding a place in which to give birth. The scripture found in Luke 2:6-7 states, “So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

The thought of a young Mary, unwed and pregnant, desperately seeking a safe place to deliver her child, is a heartbreaking reminder of the obstacles she must have faced. Mary was in a vulnerable position, unable to find a place in which to have her baby. She had to settle for a stable. It must have been terrifying and heartbreaking for her, knowing that she couldn’t provide a comfortable and safe place for her child to be born.

But, it is through Mary’s trials and tribulations that we can see the power of God. God used Mary, a young woman, to perform the impossible. He chose her to bring Jesus, the Son of God, into the world. What faith Mary must have had in God to trust Him even when faced with such adversity.
The story of Jesus’ birth is an inspiring reminder of God’s power and endless possibilities. As we approach the Christmas season, let us remember the lessons we can learn from Mary’s story. The Bible tells us in Isaiah 40:31, “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Mary waited upon the Lord and trusted Him, even when faced with seemingly impossible odds. She knew that through Him, anything was possible.

The book of Philippians 4:13 also reminds us, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Mary was able to endure the difficulties of being an unwed virgin, giving birth in a stable because of her faith in God. She knew that He would give her the strength to handle whatever came her way.
Finally, the book of Romans 8:28 tells us, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.” No matter what circumstance Mary found herself in, she knew that God would use it for good. She trusted Him to take care of her and her son, no matter what. As we embark upon the Christmas Season, let's remember that no matter what situation we find ourselves in, we can trust that God will work it out for our good! Merry Christmas! ©Rita Larson 12/2/2023
