Jacob's story begins with a backdrop of betrayal and deception. Laban, his father-in-law, had initially promised Jacob the hand of his beloved daughter Rachel in marriage. However, Laban cunningly deceived Jacob by substituting his older daughter Leah on their wedding night. This act of treachery left Jacob feeling betrayed and deceived.
Despite Laban's deceit, Jacob remained steadfast in his faith and continued to serve his father-in-law diligently. Through divine intervention, Jacob experienced remarkable prosperity. God blessed him with abundant flocks and herds, in a manner that defied natural laws. Even Laban's attempts to manipulate Jacob's wages failed, as God protected his chosen servant.

After years of enduring Laban's mistreatment, God spoke to Jacob, instructing him to return to the land of his fathers. This divine call marked a turning point in Jacob's life, as he embraced the opportunity to escape the clutches of Laban and seek new horizons. Jacob's resolve to obey God's command demonstrates his unwavering faith and trust in divine guidance.
With his wives and children, Jacob embarked on a journey to escape from Laban's grip. Knowing that Laban would not willingly let him go, Jacob chose to flee secretly. This decision required careful planning and strategic execution, as Jacob aimed to protect his family and possessions while evading Laban's pursuit.
As Laban discovered Jacob's escape, he pursued him with his kinsmen. However, God intervened once again, appearing to Laban in a dream and warning him not to harm Jacob. This divine protection ensured Jacob's safe passage and highlighted God's faithfulness in fulfilling His promises.

During his escape, Jacob encountered a host of angels, which he recognized as God's camp. He named the place Mahanaim, meaning "two camps," symbolizing the divine presence that surrounded him. This encounter served as a powerful reminder of God's constant involvement in Jacob's life and the assurance of His protection.
As Jacob continued his journey, he faced another pivotal moment – his encounter with an angelic being. In this extraordinary event, Jacob wrestled with God Himself. Through this intense struggle, Jacob displayed his determination and unwavering faith, refusing to let go until he received God's blessing. This wrestling match symbolized Jacob's resolve to overcome his past and seek reconciliation with his brother Esau.
As the struggle came to an end, God changed Jacob's name to Israel, signifying his transformation from a deceiving supplanter to a victorious prince with God. This renaming marked a profound shift in Jacob's identity and purpose. It represented his newfound resolution to live a life aligned with God's will and his commitment to walking in righteousness.

After years of separation and estrangement, Jacob and Esau finally reunited. Despite Jacob's fears and concerns about Esau's anger, their encounter was marked by forgiveness and restoration. Esau embraced Jacob with open arms, expressing his genuine love and forgiveness. This reconciliation showcased the power of forgiveness and the possibility of healing broken relationships.
The key to understanding Jacob’s escape in Genesis 31 is that God did it all – through his multiple interventions and constant protection. God was Jacob's way of escape. All glory goes to God! The story of Jacob's escape from Laban holds valuable lessons for us today. It teaches us about the importance of faith, perseverance, and trust in God's providence. Jacob's journey reminds us that even in the face of betrayal, we can find resolution and restoration through God's grace. No matter what we are facing, we need to put our trust in God. Just as Jacob experienced divine intervention and protection, we too can rely on God's faithfulness and guidance to carry out His perfect plan for our lives. If we mess up, God is still with us and guiding us back to Him. Our God delivers and restores!! He is our way of escape! ©Rita Larson 8/15/2023
